Tribute to Gary Markman Class of 1965....by Mike Dirickson

Born 1947   Died circa 1968

Gary Markman was a great guy, I know that sounds cliché, but he was truly a classmate who you knew would make any given class a more fun place to be. I did not know Gary outside of school as we lived in different neighborhoods. But, I was fortunate enough to have had him in a number of classes at Westmoor. It was as a classmate that I got to experience his wit and sense of humor first hand. Gary was not a “class clown”, he was more of a commentator/analyst of what the teacher was opining on any given day. If he disagreed with the teacher, he would challenge her/him in a friendly humorous way. I remember enjoying the repartee between Gary and Westmoor’s finest; he truly had a talent for insight and humor. More than once I told him he should be in “show business”.
Gary was also one of the best dressed students at Westmoor, to qualify you had to wear a “V” neck sweater (purchased at Author’s or Paulsen’s in Westlake Shopping Center), with a heavily starched collared dress shirt underneath. I was envious of both his talent and his image.
Tragically Gary died way too early in life, you know the saying, “only the good die young,” certainly true in this case. He died as a result of an accident while attending a field trip during a class at CSM. There is a very large Gary Markman memorial globe in CSM’s library paying tribute to Gary. He has been and will be missed by those of us who knew him.
